In July 2017 the G20 summit took place in Hamburg. For several weeks government and police forced a state of emergency over the parts of the city, which harmed all of the local population, but especially homeless people and refugees. During the days activists has to face highly militarized police forces, which acted for a big part out of the law, resulting in countless injuries and arrests. And even now nearly a year after, we‘re still dealing with the political and legal repercussions. The ‚Festival of Democracy‘ which was promised by the Senate of Hamburg turned into a Festival of Repression. The results were ridiculously high sentences for alleged activists while police brutality that occurred will probably be without consequences. Even worse Olaf Scholz, the person who is mainly responsible for the G20 desaster, was made a Federal Minister.
But there is also our story of the summit: It‘s a story of solidarity, of unity against the odds and of the courage of the activists. It‘s the story of how camps were forbidden and yet we still managed to push for places to sleep, how we ignored the zones in which we weren‘t allowed to demonstrate and finally came together for the largest demonstration that happened in Hamburg since the 1980‘s.
