I wrote these lyrics after I started working at a school and couldn‘t cope with the existing structures at all. I felt, and still feel, out of place in the staff room. The teachers are supposed to encourage the teenagers to critically self-educate but the only thing that happens is that everyone talks behind each others backs and sucks up to the principal. Phrases like „Chantal and Kevin are so stupid“ or „Yeah, kids are born but these kids are reproduced“ are normal, as well as teachers making fun of the kids.
I‘d say most of my colleagues left school to go to university and then headed straight back to school as teachers. All that they experienced were institutions of education filled with people who had the same privileges as they did. Before I ended here I had jobs in spaces, which mainly dealt with working class families or unemployed people, so it‘s especially weird to enter a place where there is no understanding or critical analysis why some students have a harder time than others. They still believe that all have equal opportunities to achieve something if we just work hard enough.
This neoliberal principle of achievement is of course bullshit, since it's not possible to just ignore existing structures of power and inequality. And at the end of the day, these are the factors that regulate our chances of success and failure on the employment market. We are pressured into optimizing our educational status and our bodies through classist ideology and bodyshaming just to fulfill the performance demands of society. According to this neoliberal logic it‘s your own fault if you don‘t manage to act as it is expected of you. However racism, sexism and the likes lead to structural exclusion of humans from certain highly prestigious jobs. Truth is it always depends on what family you were born into, or what gender you have. A person that is poor will usually stay poor. Solidarity gave way to the principle of individualism. As Thatcher said: „And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families.“ That is what my colleagues are practicing and I hate so much: they individually fight their way to the top and kick down while doing so.
